Origin of the Universe
The Origins of Life and the Universe by Paul F. Lurquin, This book is about origins: the origin of the universe, matter stars and planets systems, and finally, the origin of life -topics of profound interest that are rarely considered together. "The Origins of Life and the Universe" is a culmination of Lurquins own quest for understanding and his experiences in the classroom. The two pillars of modern physics, relativity and quantum theory, are elucidated in a way that shows the reader that the physical world of energy, matter, radiation (and their interactions) can be understood very precisely and often counter-intuitively -and how they can be applied to the Big Bang model of the creation of the universe. The book then considers the role of genetics and DNA and ultimately examines how "protocells" may have started a kind of integrated metabolism and how horizontal gene transfer may have speeded up evolution. Finally, Lurquin examines the possibilities of the end of life and the destruction of the universe, either by nuclear war or natural means.
A History of the University in Europe: Universities in the Middle Ages by Hilde De Ridder-Symoens, This is the first of four volumes that will comprise A History of the University in Europe, covering the development of the university in Europe (East and West) from its origins to the present day. No other up-to-date, comprehensive history of this type exists: its originality lies in focusing on a number of major themes viewed from a European perspective, and in its interdisciplinary, collaborative and transnational character. Volume I, covering the Middle Ages, places the medieval European universities in their social and political context. After explaining the number and types of universities from their origins in the twelfth century to around 1500, it examines the inner workings as an institution and paints a general picture of medieval student life.
Graphical timeline of our universe - This timeline of our universe shows the best scientific estimates of the occurrence of events since its origin, up until uncontroversially anticipated events in the future. The "origin" is based on a theoretical "Big Bang" event of approximately 13 billion years ago. Origin belief - An origin belief is any story or explanation that describes the beginnings of humanity, earth, life, and the universe (cosmogony). Such beliefs can be derived from many different venues including scientific investigation, metaphysical speculation, or religious belief. Earth (Noon Universe) - In the Noon Universe created by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky Earth is one of the planets populated by humans as well as their assumed origin. It is identical to the modern Earth except for the fact that it is set in the XXII century. Old Earth creationism - Old Earth creationism is a variant of the creationist view of the origin of the universe and life on Earth. It is currently the view of many Catholic and Protestant Christians, and is typically more compatible with mainstream scientific thought, on the issues of the age of the Universe or Earth, than Young Earth creationism.
